It's that time of year again! The RDB's 'Nutcracker' begins in 9 days:

PRESSEMEDDELELSE

DET KONGELIGE TEATER OG TIVOLI PRÆSENTERER
Nøddeknækkeren
Ballet i 2 akter efter E.T.A.

Repremiere 20. november 2004, Tivolis Koncertsal

For aktuel casting se www.kgl-teater.dk

Upon looking at the schedule for December, I was surprised to see that there are performances listed for the Christmas period. Is this usual? I always though this was a holiday time for the dancers?

Greetings and welcome to CriticalDance! It's great 'see' new faces! Please feel free to post if you see any performances in Copenhagen or elsewhere!

The company isn't t performing between Dec. 21 and 27 - and I don't think any of those days are set aside for rehearsal - which is a long break by US standards, though perhaps not by European standards. If my memory is correct, NYCB dancers usually only have 2-3 days off around Christmas. I guess that's sacrifice you make to be a dancer! (And they do get more than a month off in the summer, so that makes up for fewer holidays otherwise).

The majority of the RDB dancers are Danish or from other European countries, so it's not too long a journey home if they do want to spend the holidays with family. Also, I wonder if too long a break is hard physically and/or mentally, as far as keeping in performance shape and mind set.

I'm also not sure how much of the corps is involved in the Nutcracker, so December may be more intensive rehearsal-wise than performance-wise for a lot of the company, unless dancers are guesting in other Nutcrackers.

Cheers!
Kate

In relation to 'Anna Karenina'...

A DVD of the Bolshoi's version of 'Anna Karenina', starring Maria Plisetskaya and Alexander Godunov, has now been released. This was the version that Alexei Ratmansky saw as a child, and inspired his production for the Royal Danish Ballet. Ratmansky's version used the same music, composed by Plisetskaya's husband Rodion Shchedrin.

The DVD is Region O, so can be played on any DVD player that is PAL compatible and is available at the Covent Garden Gift Shop.

The December 29th performance (In the Night, Fancy Free & Far From Denmark" has been cancelled - no official explanation has been posted (at least in English), but apparently ticket sales were low.

Hmmm..now it hardly seems worth bringing the dancers back for just 2 performances on 27th and 28th,unless of course there are rehearsals anyway that week.

Greetings!
There are rehearsals next week, and since the performance was scheduled for noon, the day will likely be used to work on other ballets. Plus, the company normally only performs two or three times a week, so days without performances are more common than those with performances.

Still, it's a shame that the performance was cancelled - I was looking forward to seeing 'Far From Denmark' and 'In the Night'. I wonder if the Jerome Robbins ballets, especially 'Fancy Free', don't quite 'click' with the Danish audiences - there's just something so New York about 'Fancy Free' that it might not 'translate' well. Less enthusiasm for the ballets, plus an out of the ordinary performance time may have combined for unusually low ticket sales.

Anyway, keep an eye on this thread after Christmas for more reviews from Copenhagen!

Interesting to note that now "Etudes" is apparently going to being danced with four men. The company started out using three men, used two a couple of times when the ranks were depleted by injuries. I wonder if it might possibly be a misprint, with either Blangstrup OR Bowman doing the Sylphides section.
