Equal parts whimsy and wit, Parker's downtown take on "The Nutcracker" has plenty of fun with the ballet classic without ever becoming too self-important. Though the choreographer and his Bang Group occasionally stretch jokes a bit thin, their naughty joyousness is sure to charm the child in every adult.

The highlights included a sneezing "Waltz of the Flowers," a tap duo to Fred Waring's corny sung version of the Trepak music from "Nutcracker," and a witty trio that sent up the loonier conventions of ballet partnering. Best of all was a stand-alone piece in which Amber Sloan went to great lengths to avoid a rectangle of bubble-wrap before plunging onto it and dancing to the sound of popping plastic and the "Nutcracker" snowflakes music.
