Keeping the Sleigh From Crashing

By SYLVIANE GOLD
The NY Times
November 21, 2004

Every year around this time, the men and women of the stage crew at the New York State Theater at Lincoln Center recalibrate their internal speedometers. Both the New York City Ballet and the New York City Opera typically rotate their programs nightly, so the stagehands start dismantling the previous night's show at 8 a.m. They work through the day's rehearsals, and then they set up for the evening performance, which ends between 10 and 11 p.m.

Staying on Their Toes for 'The Nutcracker,' Show After Show

By JENNIFER DUNNING
The NY Times
November 26, 2004

George Balanchine's staging of "The Nutcracker" is considered the gold standard for productions of this holiday classic. For his American version, which opened a half-century ago on Feb. 2, 1954, danced by the New York City Ballet at City Center, Balanchine drew on his memories of performing as a child in the sumptuous original at the Maryinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, Russia. The feats of stagecraft in which Balanchine delighted as a choreographer looked charmingly rickety when compared with the special effects that were possible a decade later, when City Ballet moved to the larger stage of the New York State Theater.

In Its 50th Season, a Classic 'Nutcracker' Returns With Its Spell Intact

By JACK ANDERSON
The NY Times
November 29, 2004

Ever since the curtain first rose on the New York City Ballet's production of "The Nutcracker" in 1954, George Balanchine's staging of the Tchaikovsky classic has cast a magic spell. That spell remained unbroken when the company offered its first "Nutcracker" of the season on Friday night at the New York State Theater.

New Dewdrop and Sugar Plum

By JENNIFER DUNNING
December 7, 2004

The New York City Ballet's production of "The Nutcracker" is a glowing fantasy that is made magical by fine performing. The ballet got that kind of dancing in several role debuts and repeat performances on Thursday night and Sunday afternoon at the New York State Theater.

PETER BOAL TO PERFORM ROLE OF HERR DROSSELMEIER AT NEW YORK CITY BALLET

Mr. Boal Will Make Debut on Friday, December 17, as Part of 50th Anniversary Season of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™

New York City Ballet has announced that principal dancer Peter Boal will debut as Herr Drosselmeier in George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™ on Friday, December 17, at 8 p.m., with an additional performance on Tuesday, December 21, at 6 p.m. Mr. Boal, who joined NYCB in 1983 and has been a principal dancer since 1989, will retire from the Company in June 2005 to take the position of Artistic Director of Pacific Northwest Ballet. His performances as Herr Drosselmeier are part of New York City Ballet’s celebration of the 50th anniversary of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™.

Mr. Boal’s history with New York City Ballet’s production of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™ goes back to 1975, when he was a student at the School of American Ballet. That year, Mr. Boal was one of the children in the opening act party scene, and in 1977 and 1978, he was given the role of the Nutcracker Prince. During his more than 20 years with NYCB, Mr. Boal has danced many other roles in the ballet, and he is currently performing the role of the Cavalier at various performances throughout the season. Mr. Boal, who is also on the faculty of the School of American Ballet, was named Artistic Director of Pacific Northwest Ballet in November 2004. He will retire from NYCB and SAB in June and will start his new position the following month. Details of his retirement will be announced at a later date.

The role of Herr Drosselmeier in George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™ was originated by Michael Arshansky on February 2, 1954. The role has been performed by many dancers over the years, and has also been performed by both George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins in the NYCB production.

George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™ is being performed by New York City Ballet at the New York State Theater through Sunday, January 2. From Poohtunia:

"I took a kid to his first Nutcracker on Friday night. "Why don't the girls slip on the snow?" "How long do the toys have to stay in the big boxes before they come out to dance?" "Why is this champagne $14 for a half glass?" If you're 49 and going to your first Nutcracker, you've got questions that need answers. I did my best on the technical stuff, but on the moral issue of the champagne I opted to just pay for it myself.

This was the opening night of NYCB's Nutcracker, and it was magical! The excitement of the kids on stage was infectious. Perfectly rehearsed, and great little actors-- every one of them. The war between the mammoth rats and the tiny soldiers was easily worth the price of the ticket.

The kids who had classical dancing duties were exceptional as well. The expressions on their little faces when they heard the loud applause was priceless.

The dancing of the adults was of mixed quality. The corps looked good, and managed not to appear too frantic during all of the commotion of the Snowflakes and Flowers sections. Sofiane Sylve opted to attack the Dew Drop role to such an extent that it overshadowed any radiance. (I prefer Ansanelli's interpretation.) Maria Kowroski was gorgeous as Sugar Plum, and her pas with Charles Askegard was stunning. However, Askegard was dreadfully inattentive to pointing his feet or straightening his legs throughout his variation. It was very disappointing, and I was a little astonished to see that from anyone in the company, let alone a principal. Tom Gold as the lead Candy Cane was quite sensational. He jumped in and out of his candy striped hula hoop at an amazing speed, and as usual, dedicated his every step to the enjoyment of the audience. He's always been a very generous performer in that respect.

One clue as to the quality of the performance: When the house lights go up, and kids in the audience are mimicking the mice and chasse-ing up the aisles, you know something good happened that night."

Drosselmeier as a Child at Heart

By JACK ANDERSON
December 20, 2004

A surprising and delightful New York City Ballet debut occurred on Friday when Peter Boal, one of the company's noblest dancers, took over "The Nutcracker" role of Herr Drosselmeier, the mysterious elderly toymaker. It was the first of two debuts in major roles in the production at the New York State Theater.

Greetings!
Just back from a very enjoyable performance of the Nutcracker, led by Alexandra Ansanelli and Benjamin Millepied.

Memorable moments included Daniel Ulbricht's powerful, but precise Soldier and Miranda Weese as an elegant, solid Dewdrop. Weese doesn't have as high an extension as some of the other dancers, but her turns in attitude are so beautiful and spot on. And then there was the missing Snowflake in the first part of the snowflake section. Kudos to the other dancers for pushing though until the eighth dancer finally appeared.

Ansanelli is always exciting to watch, and she and Millepied pulled off an energetic, but elegant grand pas de deux. Millepied started moving forward on his turns in seconde after a bit, but showed nice leg position and control in the ending. He chose to stay with plain jetes en tournant in his menage, but they had nice stretch and ballon.

Among the children, I was especially impressed with Ghaleb Kayali as the Nutcracker Prince. He has very fluid, expressive hands, which he used well in his long mime solo.

Cheers
Kate

The NY TImes reports on the special 50th anniversary performance of the Nutcracker:

At 'The Nutcracker,' Seeing Double or Triple in Kaleidoscope Casting

By ANNA KISSELGOFF
January 1, 2005

With visions of five Sugarplum Fairies attended by seven Cavaliers and a double Dewdrop to lead the Waltz of the Flowers, little Marie's dream in the New York City Ballet's "Nutcracker" on Thursday night seemed to stem from something she ate at her family's Christmas party.

Actually, the multiple exposure was part of what the company called "a special performance" to celebrate the 50th anniversary of George Balanchine's production of "The Nutcracker." Having the leading roles shared by a gaggle of principal dancers was one way of lightening up, and the orchestra also got into the spirit of things at the New York State Theater by threading "Auld Lang Syne" into Tchaikovsky's finale.
