Mr. Boal’s history with New York City Ballet’s production of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™ goes back to 1975, when he was a student at the School of American Ballet. During his more than 20 years with NYCB, Mr. Boal has danced many other roles in the ballet, and he is currently performing the role of the Cavalier at various performances throughout the season. Mr. Boal, who is also on the faculty of the School of American Ballet, was named Artistic Director of Pacific Northwest Ballet in November 2004. He will retire from NYCB and SAB in June and will start his new position the following month. Details of his retirement will be announced at a later date.
The role of Herr Drosselmeier in George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™ was originated by Michael Arshansky on February 2, 1954. The role has been performed by many dancers over the years, and has also been performed by both George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins in the NYCB production.
