In step with 'Nutcracker' historymore...
by TOM STRINI for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
No, Virginia, there is no authentic, original "Nutcracker."
Before anyone danced a step of it, the world's most-performed ballet already was twice removed from its source. Marius Petipa, the venerable artistic director of the Russian czar's Maryinsky Theater Ballet, based his scenario on Alexandre Dumas Sr.'s "L'Histoire d'un Casse Noisette," a free translation of E.T.A.. Hoffmann's "Nussknacker und Mausekönig" (1816).
