Moscow Ballet plans city show
Some in local arts community aren't sweet on 'Nutcracker'

By Rick Farrant
The Journal Gazette

Quote:
The acclaimed Moscow Ballet will perform "The Nutcracker" in Fort Wayne in November, but it was no easy dance getting into the city.
The Moscow Ballet's one-night show Nov. 10 at the historic Embassy Centre will be several weeks before the Fort Wayne Ballet opens its version of the holiday show.

And that, say sources, created consternation among some arts groups, particularly those belonging to Arts United, a funding umbrella for 10 organizations, including the Fort Wayne Ballet.

Now really, this a scary article. Here we have a very, very good ballet company comeing to a city for ONE night, and the local arts community is upset about it? And they are comeing NOV 10th? ( ( 6 weeks before christmas?!).
Come on. This is not a threat to the local arts community. This is a chance for the community to learn more about ballet.
Could you imagine the Royal Ballet saying " Damn - here comes that Kirov again - always taking our spotlight"
I think this has the potential to bring in a lot of interest in dance in the community. For gosh sakes, the community should be embracing these dancers into their homes. What a chance.
Pleae, if you don't want them, send them to Seattle - We will take them!!!!

Apart from anything else, this is a great way of getting publicity.

NUTCRACKER HOPEFULS: LOCAL BALLET STUDENTS AUDITION FOR 'NUTCRACKER SUITE'
BY BRIAN PEACH for THE SOUTHERN ILLINOISAN

CARBONDALE -- Parents such as Herb and Mary Voss waited in anticipation as their sons and daughters tried out for the Moscow Ballet Monday.

A total of 36 girls and three boys, aged 7 to 18, were among the local youth vying for roles as mice, angels, snow flakes or other dance roles in the upcoming production of "The Great Russian Nutcracker." The performance is on a national tour that consists of 66 shows, and it will be presented at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau on Nov. 25.

Mary said her daughter, Abby, 13, has been dancing for nine years and loves it. She has been in large productions with professionals before, but her parents said she still gets anxious during an audition.
