Miami City Ballet provides an enchanted evening with Nutcracker

Lauren Heist, South Florida Sun Sentinel

The secular side of Christmas can really be summed up in two words: magic and tradition. For the young, it's all about the anticipation of Christmas morning and the mystery of Santa Claus. For the old, it's about the comfort of hearing the same songs year after year, using the same decorations, the same stockings.

Nutcracker's always new

Guillermo Perez, South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Ask ballet dancers about The Nutcracker and many could reply, "Been there, done that ... and done that, and done that!" The recycled familiarity could take the ho-ho-ho of Christmas and turn it into mere hokum.

Ballet not overnight production

By MARY WOZNIAK, mwozniak@news-press.com

When it comes to fine-tuning the talents of 70 to 80 children to top-notch shape for the opening night of “The Nutcracker,” more than dance is involved.

City Ballet's 'Nutcracker' simply astounds

By OCTAVIO ROCA
The Miami Herald

The season to be jolly is here, and nowhere are things jollier than onstage with Miami City Ballet.

Edward Villella's company is back with George Balanchine's beloved The Nutcracker, and Saturday night's performance at the Jackie Gleason Theater was a feast of simple gifts and sweetest smiles, of glorious dancing. This one is for everyone, a holiday classic to please the most jaded ballet lovers that also guarantees young newcomers will fall in love with dance forever.

Seasonal chic with tiny dancers

By MADELEINE MARR
The Miami Herald

Barbara Devio likely has more than just a few visions of sugarplums dancing in her head.

The 56-year-old Gainesville-area resident has been dressing the children's cast of the Miami City Ballet's George Balanchine's The Nutcracker for the past 13 years.

Delightful ritual delightfully rendered

by CELESTE FRASER DELGADO
special to the Miami Herald

In its 15th year, MCB hauled out Balanchine's choreography and Tchaikovsky's score once again last weekend for a ritual as comforting as hanging stockings or opening gifts. The ballet moves to Broward this weekend.
