I've never worked with vari lites, but I will say that in a small theatre the sound of the motor can be distracting.

Indeed, even on Broadway, Patrick Stewart halted a technical rehearsal until all the fans were turned off.<P>The original moving lights were developed for rock and roll, where fan noise is not an issue; the newer generation is fanless.
