The Winter, 2001 issue of DanceView is out and has Mary Cargill's review of Dance as Ever's October concert in Manhattan. She has this to say:
"It was an extraordinarily moving piece, especially the elegaic last song. . .where the effective lighting (by Jeffrey E. Salzberg) seemed both to box the dancer in and to elevate him above all human suffering."

There are also mentions of extraneous elements such as choreography and dancing. . . .

------------------
Jeffrey E. Than kew, than kew. . . .
What's remarkable about that review is that she pegged exactly what we were trying to do. It was, to me, the perfect collaboration between choreographer and designer; Leigh specifically asked for the confining box (actually, what he wanted -- and got -- was a gradual constriction of the available dancing space with each verse, ending in a coffin-like box) and I added that which reinforced the choreography that elevated the dancer "above all human suffering."
Of course, it helps a lot if you have a Peter Boal to dance it.
Here's the text of the last poem:
Is my team ploughing,
That I was used to drive
And hear the harness jingle
When I was man alive?'
Ay, the horses trample,
The harness jingles now;
No change though you lie under
The land you used to plough.
'Is football playing
Along the river shore,
With lads to chase the leather,
Now I stand up no more?'
Ay, the ball is flying,
The lads play heart and soul;
The goal stands up, the keeper
Stands up to keep the goal.
'Is my girl happy,
That I thought hard to leave,
And has she tired of weeping
As she lies down at eve?'
Ay, she lies down lightly,
She lies not down to weep:
Your girl is well contented.
Be still, my lad, and sleep.
'Is my friend hearty,
Now I am thin and pine,
And has he found to sleep in
A better bed than mine?'
Yes, lad, I lie easy,
I lie as lads would choose;
I cheer a dead man's sweetheart,
Never ask me whose.
------------------
Jeffrey E. Oh yeah, Grumpy, I'm sure I've worked with him. Stocky guy with a beard and a beer belly? He's got a million keys on a ring on his leather belt? Image

I know I've worked with Dopey on numerous occasions. That's great, Salzberg. If we just had a nickel for every compliment.....
