Just as a side bar, I actually saw the Cleveland Ballet's production of Theme and Variations in 1983, and the principals were in white, the soloists in grey and the corps I believe in black, somewhat rhinestone-decorated as usual, but not really offensive. Perhaps flashiness was a later development?

Salzberg, the lighting forthe Bolshoi's "La Bayadere" seemed very straightforward. Nothing surprising. Nothing sensational. Which I guess it's the way it's supposed to be.

I think you'd want to do something with the Shades.

I recently saw a video of Nutcracker that was depressing (and not for the usual reason). The lighting had absolutely no magic to it.

Like I said...depressing.

The least enchanting performance of the Entrance of the Shades that I've seen is on the video titled White Night of Dance in Leningrad. It's performed on a temporary platform stage on the banks of the Neva River, with no lighting other than daylight. There are also no ramps, so the entrance becomes quite tedious. The background - the view across the river - is quite nice, which prompts the question whether the background distracts from the dance or vice versa.

Ah...the monstrosities that are created in the name of art. I shudder to imagine the scene.
