OK. Another vent.
Last Saturday night...a sort-of preview. We were supposed to do three scenes of the musical we're opening tomorrow.
After scene three, the director stands up in front of the audience and says, "That was so much fun, we'll do another scene. This one has two lovers in front of a waterfall. Ready? Music...go!"
Of course, the stage wasn't set, the stage manager only had the cues for the three scenes we we supposed to be doing, the music wasn't cued up, the actors had no idea what was going on....

Ah, yes, the thrill of the artistic heat of the moment.
Isn't it interesting that the initial look on the faces of backstage people is universal to all venues/types of performance/etc. The jaw-dropped blank stare at each other during a momentary freeze, followed by MAJOR scurrying and whisper-shouts.

Followed by the mysterious flogging of the director...

Venting in a nother way.
I called a theatrical supply rental place today after looking at their catalog online. I talked to an idiot who told me they didn't have the equipment their catalog said they had. I had my husband call them back. Somebody else told him they did have the equipment. So...either they didn't want to talk to me (maybe 'cause I'm a woman?) or they really don't know how to hire competent people to man their phones.
This seems to be typical for these types of places.
Aggravating.

My latest rant:
From the Burlington Free Press (July 7, 2002):
"The sets, lights and costumes reveal wonderful little hints about the characters and their milieu, and the sunset, painted by ***** ********, is gorgeous."
There was no painted sunset.
[This message has been edited by salzberg (edited August 04, 2002).]
