Elisabeth Dalton
Designer of dramatic sets and costumes for opera houses and ballet companies in Germany, Italy and Russia

ELISABETH DALTON was a prolific designer for ballet and opera, far too little of whose work was seen in her home country. She studied theatre design at the Wimbledon School of Art, and then at the Slade under Nicholas Georgiadis, a significant influence on her work. She worked as assistant on his Royal Opera House productions of The Nutcracker and Aida (both in 1968), and on Les Troyens the following year. It was also in 1969 that she designed her first major sets and costumes for dance, for John Cranko’s The Taming of the Shrew, mounted by the Stuttgart Ballet and one of the company’s longest-lasting successes.
