This same theatre, when it comes time to negotiate for next year, will be very surprised, I'm sure, when I take them through the season, show by show, and say, "this one looks hard, so it'll be base rate plus 20%; that one looks easy, so it'll just be the base rate...."

Well, the lighting designer should be on the company's production staff, not someone who just happens to work at the theatre (It's an artistic function, not a technical one), so that conversation should occur at a fairly early point in the process.
