ANyone had any experience with this yet? Any tips, suggestions, pitfalls, etc.? I'm sure it's more difficult now, and I am nervous about what I will face.

It's certainly a little more nerve-racking making sure you have checked the appropriate tools. Actually, since 9/11, I pretty much have a complete set of tools in one state where I work, and one set on the side, so I don't have to travel with them. And, if touring not by car, I must admit, I quite frankly don't take a lot of the stuff that I used to take. And when I get to the theater, I ask to borrow it if needed. The amount of time involved to explain some tools is enormous, let alone that which I already have to explain - glow tape (always stops em), lighting templates, mini disc player, etc.

Well, more specifically, are there issues about bring wrenches, etc.? Any other advice from folks? What are wardrobe people doing? Can you still carry a tutu in to the cabin? Sewing kit?

As a personal traveller in Europe, I know that scissors are always confiscated and discarded from hand luggage now and I suspect that the same would apply to anything that might be seen a weapon. However, scissors and, I assume, tools would be OK in cargo hold luggage in Europe.

I rarely take tools with me. At most, I carry a pocket knife, a multitool (knife, pliers, file, screwdriver, and -- that most important tool of all -- bottle opener, all in one tool), and a crescent wrench (although I rarely get/have to use the wrench).

What's absolutely indispensable to me, of course, is my computer. How did we ever do lighting design without them?

Actually, there's a technical term for dancers who don't listen to me: "dark".
