Post subject:  DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME

A performer in a church play in Cincinatti fell to her death this week. While it's difficult to tell at this point exactly what happened, this is a good opportunity to remind those who might consider flying performers in their performances that this is something that should absolutely never be done, unless the flying rig was designed by people who with a great deal of professional experience in flying humans and is operated by people trained by those professionals.

Flying people is dangerous and complicated. Little Susie's dad, who does a lot of "tech work" (whatever that is) at the local community theatre, is simply not qualified to do it, no matter how much he thinks he is. Neither, in most cases, is the staff, professional as they may be at other aspects of technical theatre, at the theater. ... /1055/NEWS

If it weren't so tragic it might qualify for a Darwin award.

Well, aerial dance can be quite beautiful, and many churches mount productions that are very professional, with high production values.

We don't know exactly what happened, but in general, there are only three possible causes for this type of accident:

  • Improper use of equipment. This would, of course, include the failure to use at all the appropriate safety equipment.
  • Improper maintenance of the equipment. This would include safety inspections.
  • Improper design and manufacture of the equipment, including quality control.

According to the coroner's report, the young lady was indeed using a rock-climbing harness. She attached it in the dark and didn't test it, so she was unaware that her costume had snagged in the mechanism, preventing it from latching securely.

Folks, as I've said before, if you tell the emergency room physician, "We didn't have the money to do it right," she's not then going to say, "Oh, OK, in that case, he's not dead."

There have been numerous deaths of rock-climbers from a similar mistake. Seriously, people. ALWAYS CHECK YOUR EQUIPMENT. And carry a maglite.

I like your comment, salz. I'm stealing it.
