Post subject:  To learn about lighting

I want to learn about stage lighting for dance.

Just theatre lighting stuff, technical stuff, like things about colors, what sort of light are there, what are the basics etc.

Does there exist a book about it, or maybe a website?

I hope someone can help me.

I would start with the series of articles that Tom Skelton wrote for Dance Magazine in the mid-50s (that's not a typo). The equipment he discusses, of course, is obsolete, but his comments on technique and process are dead on.

Most college bookstores, in this country at least, have basic textbooks which will serve you well.

You might also look at the article on my web site, How to Work with a Lighting Designer, which discusses the process.

Do you know which numbers of dance magazine had articles about Tom Skelton?
Or where can I find them? ( very antique!!!!)

Your site is also interesting, thanks for the info

I believe the series started in late 1955.

I once asked Dance Magazine for permission to repeat the series on my web site, but I never got an answer.

Thanks for the kind words.

The "Stage Lighting for Students" web site is online at:

It's still a work-in-progress (and probably will be for the next 20 years); we're still plugging in glossary words, for example.

Suggestions, comments, and content are all gratefully appreciated.

I have no intention of lighting anything, but it's interesting reading. Any resource that quotes Stephen Colbert must be good.

Recently I've collected a list of useful websites and information about stage lighting for myself, because I also want to know the basics. And I thought why not write a post about it, so that anyone may benefit from it, so here it is: stage lighting resources.
