Opening Night June 17 2005

To be young is hard enough as it is, is the common word. Everything is at large, is on the change and leads to insecurity, lack of self-assurance and to millions of related questions. But it’s also the lifetime to put a statement for the future, to cease pondering: “This is us”. Period.

This inspired Vick Wesseling to create this dancetheatre project, which will be presented by Danshuis Limburg on June 16 (try-out), 17 (opening night), 18 en 19 (matinee) in “het Patronaat”, Sittarderweg in Heerlen.
This is Us/ Dit zijn Wij is also Vicky Wesseling’s final graduating project at Drama Academy (Toneelacademie) Maastricht. It is a project for and with young people (14-17), about their world, their views and perspectives. Or as Vicky says in her own words: “I am interested in how kids cope with everyday life. How do they deal with the “news of the world”? What are their dreams and what are their fears.”

Last February, Danshuis Limburg auditioned over 40 urban talents, who cued up to show their talents. A two-day workshop on March 12 and 13 in the “Glaspaleis” in Heerlen follow those auditions. Twelve finalists will compete to enter the show. No special trained skills are required. Ordinary kids are just asked to show what they already can do, whether it is talk, dance, sing, skate or any form of expression that can be presented in front of an audience.

Only 8 will start rehearsals end of March.

The result can be seen at the opening night on June 17. After Heerlen, performances are planned on several other locations throughout Limburg.
