Laban news release

Laban students share their dance expertise at home and away

Third year students from Laban, the world leading conservatoire for contemporary dance artist training based in Deptford SE8, are hitting the road this Spring with a show created especially for them by leading international and UK-based contemporary dance makers. The dancers will perform for students and staff from schools and colleges from across South London and the UK. The show includes a selection of work by choreographers: Joclécio Azevedo, Rosalind Newman, Lionel Popkin, Stephanie Schober, Kirstie Simson and Christian Burns and Athina Vahla. Following each performance there is a question and answer session and the event is offered free to all the participating schools and colleges.

The tour is a valuable experience for Laban and the institutions they tour to. Laban students gain experience of touring and performing work by professional choreographers and the institutions experience a diverse programme of contemporary dance. It is also a chance to gain an insight into professional dance training and to life and work at Laban.

Rebecca Bogue, dance teacher at Kensington and Chelsea College explains: “These performance events inspire students and allow them to consider the possibility of being in those dancers’ shoes in three years time. The post-show chat is an ideal opportunity to learn about the realities of professional dance training from the horses’ mouth. This is essential, as audiences need current and relevant information.” Nikki Hornett, a student at the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts agrees: “I found the performance inspiring and educational, demonstrating how to move and be free on stage. The work was amazing to watch and made me want to learn more about Laban.”

Although these events are closed to the public there is an opportunity for everyone to see the students perform in their annual degree show which runs from 27 June to 2 July at Laban. The degree show includes a breath-taking performance event in the stunning surrounds of St Paul’s Church, Deptford. For further information call Laban on 020 8691 8600 or visit
