Somehow I missed all the action the first time around. Maggie, that story about French scrabble is hilarious.
And, Michael M, this is for you. A bit of history lesson on the English QWERTY keyboard, so called because Q W E R T Y are the first six alphabets in the upper left corner of the keyboard.
The arrangement of the alphabets on this keyboard as we know it today stemmed from the days of the mechanical typewriter. As the first typewriters were prone to jamming from the furious typing of professional typists, the typewriter manufacturers rearranged the keys into an awkward pattern to deliberately slow the typists down. This is the keyboard we've inherited today, designed to be inefficient!
There is an alternate keyboard called DVORAK, which puts all the most commonly used characters conveniently in the home row but, with generations of typists trained on QWERTY, the efficient DVORAK keyboard user remains in the minority.
Amazing but true.
So, to have a truly international keyboard, we'll need both the QWERTY and DVORAK layouts.
