School stops dancing around the issue: Hip-hop is hot

BROOKSVILLE -- When Chocachatti Elementary School debuted in 1999 with an emphasis on the arts, one of its most intriguing features was the fact students would learn ballet.

But when school resumes in August, the attention to ballet, which has drawn interest from almost no boys and only a few girls, will be dramatically reduced, if not eliminated altogether.

In its place, hip-hop is taking center stage.

That is hip-hop in the MTV sense of the genre: the choreographed moves of N'Sync, Britney Spears and Janet Jackson. Or, for those of an earlier generation, think of the dancing from Michael Jackson's Beat It or Thriller videos.

Streetdance is essentially hip-hop, but just with a modern name. It’s a high-energy dance and much deeper than what you will see on television from the likes of Justin Timberlake. It involves all aspects of hip-hop and is really, really energetic and uplifting.

The hip-hop dance that Teddy Ted teaches emerged on the East and West coasts in the early '70s with b-boys popping and locking and, by the early '80s breaking or break dancing. But he noted that these are all aspects of earlier forms of dance ballet, modern, tap, as well as gymnastics. "I give them a glimpse of the history. You can't do this if you don't know the history that comes before hip-hop: Bojangles, the Nicholas Brothers, Fed Astaire, James Brown," he says.

Which is one reason I have booked a breakdancer to teach my five- and six-year-old daughters how to dance. Lana's pupils include schoolchildren, teenagers at youth clubs and a group of mothers in Surrey. She teaches "breaking" and the slightly easier discipline of "streetdancing".
