My DD studies ballet at a prestigious school. She is 10. Every year girls are cut. Next year 20 will be cut.
Last night she told me she wasn't as good as the others. Many of her classmates are preformig in The Nutcracker now but she is not because she did not want to audition. I think the excitement of the other girls may be hurting her self-confidence. This makes me sad. I watch her sometimes and believe she has strength, great feet and wonderful legs. Sometimes her dance combinations are labored. This is her first year doing intricate combinations. Her pirouette is getting good and her balance is great. Can I help her in any way to be more fluid with her movements?

Encourage her to think of moving in between poses. If she or you know musical terms, a good one that comes to mind is "legato." Or "cantabile" -- in a singing-like manner. Sometimes modern dance can help, but only if it's applied to ballet and not just as a stand-alone thing.

We teachers often see students that seem to, ironically, be afraid to MOVE!

Hope this helps!

Also, she should only be in competition with herself -- and her own potential. Comparing ourselves to others virtually gets us nowhere. However, learning and admiring what others do well and then trying to apply to ourselves is good and valuable.

Thank you for your helpful suggestions I especially like the music analogy,
Lisa
