Hi Guys!

RE: Query into ‘Mandatory’ Dance Teacher Qualifications

Over the last few years I have seen a huge influx in ‘mandatory’ dance teacher qualifications; the list changing depending upon who you are talking to, and in what context. It appears that if you want to be a teacher working across both the recreational sector and in mainstream education you ‘must’ complete such an array of qualifications that it seems somewhat impossible (not to mention financially not viable!). This list of course also getting even longer it would seem by every passing year.

I therefore wished to ask you which, in your opinion, are worth while, and which are likely to be ‘faddy’ with a quick expiration date of the following courses…?

Diploma in Dance Teaching and Learning (Children and Young People)
[ ]

Certificate in Safe and Effective Dance Practice
[ ]

NCFE Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools (QCF)
[ ]
(This last course within the context of becoming a more versatile teacher, and potentially more capable of leading outreach sessions, which are so popular at present)

Sports Coach UK Qualifications [ ]
• Safeguarding and Protecting Children Level 1 & 2,
• Behaviour Management
• Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults
• Equity in Coaching
• Analysing Your Coaching
• Coaching Disabled Performers

First Aid Courses []
• First Aid at Work
• Paediatric First Aid
• Sports First Aid

In terms of the latter two sub-sections (Sports Coach and First Aid), many teachers I know spot each entire list! However, I can’t help but wonder if there are so many overlaps and duplicated training that it may be a case of ‘qualifications for qualifications sake’ rather than all these listed qualifications actually being beneficial; either in terms of professional development or career advancement.

Therefore I would also like to know your opinion on the recent trend in the UK to ‘collect’ as many Sports Coach UK and First Aid Certificates, as well as your opinion as to the value to a dance teacher in attaining any of the above (bar a single general First Aid certificate – which common sense dictates would be essential!).

Looking forward to hearing from you all!

Kindest Wishes,
