Just a little tweak to the academy link (the first one didn't open for me) - http://www.gelseykirklandballet.org/ It's a lovely website. Hope she does well.

I adore Gelsey Kirkland..she has really been an inspiration for me. Has anyone ever read her book, Dancing On My Grave? It was written with such bravery. I would love to meet her in person!

I got to meet and work with her (and Michael) last Summer at NW Dance Intensive in Olympia, Washington where she was our headliner teacher and I was on the faculty.

She is genuinely sweet, nice, cares about the students, gives thoughtful classes and corrections/comments, and has a hearty laugh. Never the less, she commands great authority in the classroom -- she is someone you respect and "don't mess with." And for someone with two titanium hips, she demonstrated quite a lot -- impressively so. [I was showing her around, and while watching one class from a hallway through a window, her first question to me was if I still had my own hips.]

I believe every student was thrilled to have had her as a teacher. She gave "real" classes (as opposed to talking about technique or theory too much or going off on tangents), sometimes focusing on one idea and then building on that.

I too, hope their studio thrives and well meets the expectations of both faculty and students.

Oh my, I wasn't aware that Gelsey had to have both of her hips replaced. Were they replaced due the physical stresses of her dancing career? I am glad she is fully functioning again-she seems to have amazing spirit. It must have been a wonderful experience for you to work with her :D
