The Genee International Ballet Competition, sponsored by the Royal Academy of Dance, will be held in Singapore for the first time, September 9, 10 and 12, 2009. Tara Tan reports in the Straits Times:

Singapore is a good company to cultivate a greater interest in ballet. They like to think of themselves as very cosmopolitan and ballet would seem very cultured to them. Besides, there is a lot of disposal income there that could easily go to ballet and ballet training.

Claudia Dean, from Australia's Gold Coast, has been awarded the Gold Medal at the Genee Competition 2009 in Singapore. A report on goldcoast.com:

According to the Royal Academy of Dance website, ten of twelve Genee Competition finalists are from Australia, plus one from Singapore and one from Japan, although the finalist from Japan has also studied at the Goh Academy (Vancouver, BC) and with Lynette Kelly, a noted Canadian RAD examiner.
