We all know about summer schools or dance intensives, but equally how difficult it can be to find events which are either specifically for adults or where they are welcome. So, here is a round up of those I know about in the UK, including two that very much focus on ballet. Please add to the list if you know more.
Open Dance Group Summer Workshops
Now in its 17th year, this four-day event is held at the Open University in Milton Keynes. The 2008 dates are 21-24 August.
Each teacher visits for one complete day, which features a contemporary technique class followed by creative activities based on repertory or other choreographic ideas.
This year’s teachers are Lyndsey McConville (Bedlam Dance Company), Delphine Gaborit (founder member of Bonachela Dance Company, now dancing with Frantic Assembly, Lost Dog and others), Rosie Kay (who has her own company in Birmingham), and Anthony Missen (formerly of Scottish Dance Theatre).
Participants may attend for one, two, three or all four days. Minimum age 16.
Fees are ₤25 per day, although there are concessions and discounts are available for early booking and attending for all four days.

Russian Ballet Society International Summer Ballet Course
Held at Loretto School, Musselburgh, just outside Edinburgh, this two week includes classes in ballet, pas de deux, character dance, repertoire, jazz and modern dance. There is an end of course performance. It’s residential although some places are available for non-residents.
Dates are 12-26 July 2008.
Fees are ₤725 for two weeks residential (₤430 non-residential). It may also be possible to attend just one week.
More details, including video of last year’s classes and performances can be found at http://www.russianballetsociety.co.uk
. You can also e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org
The leaflet says the course is for those aged 13 and over, and I am assured adults are welcome. From photos, it seems participants are generally older teenagers and above.
Intensive Summer Ballet Course
Held at Danceworks in Central London, this runs from Wednesday 16-Friday 18 July, and Monday 21-Friday 25 July, with a demonstration on Saturday 26 July.
It’s taught by Jean-Pascal Cabardos, former dancer with Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, Deutsch Oper in Berlin and l’Opera d’Avignon; and former teacher at the English National Ballet School. He will be assisted by Francine Richard, former sujet at the Paris Opera Ballet.
The focus is very much on ballet (French school) and includes pointe, repertoire and solo work.
Fees are ₤330 for the full course, although there are variations if you only want to take the morning sessions.
Adults of all ages are welcome.
Laban Summer School
This runs over two weeks from 14-25 July. There are four sessions per day with eight different classes or levels in each session to choose from. Classes include ballet, contemporary, jazz, contact improvisation, pilates, yoga, hip hop, physical theatre and choreography, with more teachers than its possible to list here.
Fess are ₤485. Accommodation can be arranged locally for a further ₤335.

The Place Summer Intensives
No doubt there will be a course at The Place. In previous years this has been in late-July and early-August, with three weeks to choose from. More details when I have them.
