The students signed up for Europe's new D.A.N.C.E apprentice scheme have lucked out on a terrific scale. Directed by Wayne McGregor, William Forsythe, Frederic Flamand and Angelin Preljocaj, they've been given nothing less than the chance to study with four of the most interesting choreographers in the world. The snag for audiences, however, is that not all the material created for their graduation performance matches up to the choreographers' reputations.

If you're showing off a company of young dancers, shouldn't you give them something to dance? D.A.N.C.E. or Dance Network aCross Europe, is a new apprentice programme for dancers, a high-profile initiative with starry artistic direction. The dancers look fine, but the programme's first British performance was knocked flat by its choice of repertory.
