Choreographer Jonathan Burrows and composer Matteo Fargion have an international reputation for the intelligence, humour and musicality of their work. Their last piece, Both Sitting Duet, was seen in 17 countries, won a 2003 New York Dance and Performance ‘Bessie’ Award and was one of the hits of Dance Umbrella 2003 and last year's ROH2 programme.

Burrows, a former soloist with The Royal Ballet, was given an award in 2002 by the Foundation for Contemporary Arts in New York in recognition of his ongoing contribution to contemporary dance. Fargion has been his close collaborator for over fifteen years.

At the heart of their work is a love of rhythmic form and the quiet intensity of communication between themselves and the audience. The Quiet Dance is just what it says it is.

‘Jonathan Burrows is Britain's Columbus, dance's explorer, a man in quest of new lands and unknown territory.... He is a true original.’ The Financial Times

The Quiet Dance is co-commissioned by Dance Umbrella, Dance 4 Nottingham, Joint Adventures Munich, Kaaitheater Brussels.

The Quiet Dance
By Donald Hutera for The Times

Success in dance can arise from the unlikeliest sources. Consider the former Royal Ballet soloist turned choreographer Jonathan Burrows and his frequent collaborator, the Italian composer Matteo Fargion. Their last work, Both Sitting Duet, was a sedentary and silent physical translation of a musical score by American composer Morton Feldman. This almost ridiculously simple premise spawned an international award-winning hit.
