Lublin Dance Festival 2009


The Festival has come and gone now, but provided another fine 5 days of dance and discussion.

As always there were a variety of strands:

- dance classses
- a conference discussing the links between dance and literature
- performances from leading groups from Poland and beyond, several of which picked up the literary theme
- post performance discussions each day

In some ways this latter category provides my happiest memories of Lublin, with the Arts Centre bar filled with people listening to and questioning that day's creators and performers, in discussions sometimes going on past 1am.

The atmosphere at Lublin is one of the highlights and, as one Polish dance artist from N. Poland told me: "Coming to Lublin always feels like coming home."

LUBLIN - GEOGRAPHY

At only 175 kilometers from Warsaw, Lublin is not only worth visiting solely for its monuments. It is a centre of one of the eastern provinces of Poland, and with a population of 350,000 it is the biggest Polish city east of the Vistula River.

Lublin is located on the Lublin Upland. The Bystrzyca river divides the city into two diverse parts: the western side is made up of undulating hills with a number of interesting valleys and gorges; while it is flatter on the eastern side. The city has great possibilities for recreation for western visitors with its blend of tradition, rural crafts, and a large lake and several forests to wander through.
