Jerry Springer Makes Great Opera, Insists Director

BY JILL LAWLESS
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

EDINBURGH, Scotland -- One of the hottest tickets at this year's Edinburgh Fringe festival features expletive-spitting louts, a man clad only in a diaper, a talk show host and Satan. Naturally, it is an opera.
"Jerry Springer: The Opera" is selling out its daily performances more

And now - a Jerry Springer opera
By Michael Shmith
Edinburgh

The Age

One of the hits at Edinburgh this year isn't even in the mainstream festival, which has enough interest of its own, including Wagner's Parsifal and Siegfried, Macbeth in Dutch, Britten's The Turn of the Screw with a mainly French cast, and a Flemish production of Swan Lake that features Rothbart with a live owl clamped to the top of his head.

But what about the English opera whose main character is an American chat-show host who is accidentally shot by a black nappy-fetishist aiming at the Ku Klux Klan, and sent to hell to interview Satan, Jesus, Adam and Eve as if his life depended on it?

Jerry Springer - the Opera, which is playing to packed houses at the Assembly Rooms as part of the Fringe. If the title seems preposterous (Oprah - the Opera might have been snappier), try the show.

Grand concept? 'Springer' as opera

By Fawn Vrazo
Philadelphia Inquirer Staff Writer

LONDON -The first hint that this is not your usual opera comes long before the diaper-clad fat guy sings, before the line of Ku Klux Klan members does a snappy dance in white robes and masks, before the chorus exclaims, "My mom used to be my dad!" more

LONDON --- The National Theater once again dominated the 2004 Laurence Olivier Award nominations, honoring the finest in London theater, opera, and dance during 2003. The South Bank complex garnered 20 noms --- one fewer, actually, than it managed last year --- including three of the four play nominees and the musical frontrunner, "Jerry Springer --- The Opera."

Lee laments success of Springer
by Ruth Gillespie

Jerry Springer – the Opera creator Stewart Lee has revealed he is uneasy over the commercial West End success of his hit show.

He admitted: "If I had known it would run in the West End as an independent commercial venture I would not have got involved."

Lee's comments come after he launched an impassioned appeal on behalf of the troubled BAC, where the show began its life, as he accepted the Olivier Award for Best New Musical.

By FRAN STEWART

Playing Jesus in the London production of "Jerry Springer The Opera" is nothing new to Wills Morgan. His first time in the holy role had been in a Case Western Reserve University production of "Godspell" more than a decade ago.
