Of course, no one is supposed to like the title - that's part of the joke in a show that parodies and celebrates Broadway traditions. There is big-city greed, corruption and romance on the wrong side of the law in a show that periodically stops the action to discuss the plot.

'Urinetown': You've gotta go

'Urinetown' makes hilarious satirical splash

True, a subsequent national tour floundered, though as Urinetown's Little Sally might tell you, any good story line needs some sort of setback. And now it's back, and in better-than-Broadway form in a Chicago-created commercial production that opened Sunday night at the Mercury Theater.

Urinetown
by COLIN ROSE for the Sydney Morning Herlad

"I was pregnant with my second baby when they approached me to be in the show," McCune says. "I knew that I'd be nursing a baby, so when I read that Hope is bound and gagged, I thought, 'Oh great, I can be in a musical and I won't have to do much'." McCune seems to have caught the spirit of Urinetown's self-satirising jokiness. More seriously and sincerely, she describes herself as "an actor who sings, rather than a singer who acts" and "so very lucky" in her career. She's particularly fond of musicals because performing them "takes it up a notch".
