Flush with creativity

Of course, no one is supposed to like the title - that's part of the joke in a show that parodies and celebrates Broadway traditions. There is big-city greed, corruption and romance on the wrong side of the law in a show that periodically stops the action to discuss the plot.

'Urinetown': You've gotta go

By CELIA R. BAKER
The Salt Lake Tribune
April 16, 2004

OK, let's admit it. The touring show that opens at Salt Lake City's Capitol Theatre this week has the most impolite title of any Broadway show, ever.

"Ya think?" said actor Tom Hewitt, exaggerating the inflection.

'Urinetown' makes hilarious satirical splash
by HEDY WEISS for the Chicago Sun-Times

Urinetown
by COLIN ROSE for the Sydney Morning Herlad

"I was pregnant with my second baby when they approached me to be in the show," McCune says. "I knew that I'd be nursing a baby, so when I read that Hope is bound and gagged, I thought, 'Oh great, I can be in a musical and I won't have to do much'." McCune seems to have caught the spirit of Urinetown's self-satirising jokiness. More seriously and sincerely, she describes herself as "an actor who sings, rather than a singer who acts" and "so very lucky" in her career. She's particularly fond of musicals because performing them "takes it up a notch".
