In between garnering a Tony nomination for best actress in a musical (she lost to Marissa Jaret Winokur from "Hairspray") and winning an Astaire Award (given annually to one man, one woman and one choreographer for extraordinary achievement in dance), Parkinson took time out from a hit show to have a baby.

What remains unaltered is the overwhelming sense that this is a production that pummels rather than seduces. And for all its heat and relentless drive there also is something abidingly cold and angry about the show. Instead of allowing the characters to draw you into their fates, Tharp martials them into a marathon assault of sound and motion and light. (When in doubt, beam yet one more laser-like burst.) Always on high alert, her hard-punching, razzle-dazzle, can-you-top-this approach suggests she doesn't quite trust the sort of moments of silence, contemplation and connection so essential to making a story reach your heart.
