"Sandra Foster-Kings’ reputation and creditability as an instructor and choreographer secured her the position of a IABD conference host," said Bonnie Bing, Executive Director, IABD (Philadelphia, PA)."

The 14th Annual IABD conference promises to be an enriching experience, as it creates a venue for workshops, master classes, performances, auditions and networking among aspiring dance professionals and legends.

The International Association of Blacks in Dance Conference is the only venue where youth and professional dancers can participate in multi-company audition. Some of the top dance companies in the world will be conducting auditions. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Philadanco, Sandra Foster-King Dance Collection, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, Dayton Contemporary Dance Theatre, Jacob’s Pillow, Dallas Black Dance Theatre and Lula Washington Dance will all be scouting for new talent.

IABD was founded over 14 years ago by African-American dancers and choreographers who united to discuss common problems with professional development and to create venues to showcase their works. Out of this union came the creation of an international conference to address the issues at hand. The purpose of the conference is to preserve and promote dance by people of African ancestry or origin, and to provide opportunities for artists in the areas of networking, fund raising, performance techniques, health and education, audience development, touring and philosophical dialogue.

The Foster-King Dance Collection, host dance company for the 14th Annual IABD conference is a non-profit organization that creates a venue for youth and professional dancers of color to perform works by legendary choreographers of African descent, and exemplifies the purpose of IABD.

Sandra Foster-King, Artistic Director of Foster-King Dance Collection, holds a BFA, from the United States International University, San Diego and a MFA, in Dance from University of California, Irvine. Ms Foster-King has traveled and studied extensively throughout the United States and Europe. She is a prominent figure in San Diego’s dance community and is the recipient of several dance acknowledgements and awards, including: UCSD Outstanding Faculty; Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers; 100 San Diego Role Model; 1997 Outstanding Contributor of Dance and the 1999 "Tommy" Dance Educator of the Year Award.

Ms. Foster-King is an instructor of modern dance and ballet at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts and Lecturer of Dance at the University of California San Diego, serving over 16 years at both institutions.

Over the past 20 years Sandra Foster-King has shared her passion and talents with hundreds of students. Fifty or more of them have gone on to careers in film, television, Broadway and professional dance companies such as the Dallas Black Dance Company, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Company, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Joffrey Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem and universities of Fine Arts. "Sandra has received outstanding reviews for her work for over 20 years, and is well respected by all of our founding dance legends. The philosophy behind Foster-King Dance Collection supports our organizations’ purpose, " says Bonnie Bing.

Foster-King Dance Collection is developing conference travel packages with the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau (ConVis). "This history-making event will present an opportunity for San Diego to highlight its culturally diverse dance community and host dance legends around the world," said Rick Prickett, Manager, Cultural Tourism, San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau.

"We’re busy setting the stage for ‘2001 Dance Odyssey.’ The 14th Annual IABD conference promises to be a history-making celebration, San Diego style," said Foster-King. The Foster-King Dance Collection has gathered the support of the San Diego Dance Alliance as co-producers, East County Performing Arts Center as the sponsoring theater, and San Diego’s Town and Country Resort and Convention Center as the host hotel.

For additional information on the 14th Annual International Association of Blacks in Dance Conference, contact M.S.
