Christopher Alden’s staging of Bizet’s Djamileh, a monomaniacally sex-fixated work, tries to discover exactly what this opera is about.

Languid Haroun explores the charms of successive concubines for a month before sending them on their way with a pearl necklace. Djamileh, the latest, is determined to stay, though Haroun’s sidekick Splendiano is keen for him to dump Djamileh so he can have a crack at her himself.
