She memorably reworked the Indian dance number, "Ugg-a Wugg," in the 1998-99 Broadway Peter Pan (also seen on the road) into a percussive Stomp-worthy drum number that had audiences cheering. The slick reworking also solved some of the number's politically incorrect lyrics.

More

'Seussical' Principals Begin Rehearsals for National Tour

Kenneth Jones, Playbill On-Line

The principals of the new national tour of Seussical meet in Manhattan Aug. 13 for their first rehearsal toward the reimagined world of the family-friendly musical that had a bumpy road on Broadway.

A mixed review:

New 'Seussical' improved, but nothing special

Michael Phillips, Chicago Metromix

In "Seussical the Musical," a Yugo of a show at the Cadillac Palace Theatre through Dec. 22, Horton the elephant is cornered by hunters, auctioned off into show-biz slavery and forced to tour with the Circus McGurkus.

I'm dying to see this:

Quote:
'Seussical': Horton hears a boo

Hedy Weiss, Chicago Sun-Times

As certified Baby Boomers will tell you, they were raised by parents holding a copy of Dr. Spock's manual in one hand, and a book by Dr. Seuss in the other.

But from these reviews, it sounds as if the title of Hedy Weiss's review is cleverer than the show is.

Ouch:

Quote:
Oh, the places you'll go when you rediscover Seuss

Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune

The legacy of Dr. Seuss will surely survive a piddling misfire like "Seussical the Musical," running through Sunday at the Cadillac Palace Theatre. One stage venture cannot undo a great American humorist's glorious array of matter-of-fact craziness.

Quote:
'Seussical' musical is inexcusable at Beck

By ZACHARY LEWIS
The Cleveland Plain Dealer
December 07, 2004

Burdened by a flawed script, a largely forgettable musical score and a bare-bones set that leaves too much in the colorful land of Seuss to the imagination, "Seussical" mostly whisks viewers to the land of theatrical doldrums.

'Seussical': You're sure to like it, Sam I am
by HEDY WEISS for the Chicago Sun-Times

True, and as it happens, this chock-full yet ideally condensed 75-minute version - playfully directed by Eric Rosen, with spicy choreography by Suzanne Viverito, strong musical direction by Doug Peck and a slew of zesty performers - is leaps and bounds beyond the Broadway edition and winning in its intimacy.
