'Fly With Friends' for free at Miller Outdoor Theatre By MOLLY GLENTZER
Houston Chronicle
Members of the Fly Dance Co. bring their hip-hop moves to Miller Outdoor Theatre for a free Friday show.
In the late 1990s, the all-male Fly Dance Co. was known as much for its bad offstage attitude as its head spins. The troupe's members were Hispanic and black teens who honed their hip-hop tricks in garages and clubs. They liked the idea of being famous but resisted being corralled by the white, middle-aged drill-team coach who wanted to make it happen for them.
Kathy Wood made them rehearse regularly, dance together to music they didn't like and (gasp) wear costumes. Their hip-hop friends called them sellouts. Traditional dance folks didn't know what to make of them. But audiences loved their comic antics and high spirits onstage.
