I saw the Pickle Circus last night, and I wholeheartedly recommend it. The show, “Birdhouse Factory,” runs through January 2.

From the SF Chronicle’s review, featured at the Circus’s website:

Quote:
Part of the genius of director Chris Lashua's factory concept is in the way he transforms circus rigging into integral parts of the acts; part is in the inventive humor with which the performers become Rube Goldberg-like machines. The beauty of "Birdhouse," though, lies in the generosity with which acts are layered upon each other and the superb integration of circus skills with music, light and choreography. And the glory of the Pickle Circus holiday production is in the excellence of its performers.

The show is a kind of 30th anniversary tribute to the Pickle Family Circus, which reinvented the art form and inspired the new circus movement in the '70s. Now in its third incarnation (after some years as the New Pickle Circus), and a project of the Circus Center (under the artistic directorship of Lu Yi), the Pickle Circus is reaping the rewards of the movement it inspired. Lashua and most of the other performers have been featured artists with Cirque du Soleil and other latter-day circuses.

And from the review at circusnews.com:

Quote:
Every Circus show has a tango number nowadays, but
none like Sam Payne and Sandra Feusi's "Vertical
Tango" performed on the Chinese pole. Maintaining the
tension of the tango's focused flirtation, this couple
gave off heat while partnering on the ground and in
the air. A dip from the pole, a slide down the body,
a chase while climbing up, an embrace while floating
down, sinuous strength translated to intense
sensuality. Gasps from the audience showed that we
were with them for every step of the seductive scene."

The Vertical Tango was my favorite act. Not only was it great circus, it was great dance, with some of the best choreography I’ve seen recently.
