By presenting an evening titled "The Next Generation" at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre on Saturday, Lynn Dally, artistic director of Jazz Tap Ensemble, passed the mantle, so to speak, to a younger generation of dancers. By doing so, Dally assured that the art of tap would be in good hands--or feet, as the case may be.

It made perfect sense, then, to kick off Dance 2K2, a celebration of National Dance Month, with this decidedly Yankee art form at the Los Angeles Theatre Center on Saturday.
The first in a series of eclectic dance performances, tap proved to be very much alive and well as a number of artists vamped, jumped and jived.

The dancers of the Jazz Tap Ensemble opened their program at the Joyce Theater on Tuesday night by sauntering across the stage to "I Hear a Rhapsody." They might have been strolling off to a party — a very pleasant choreographic party.

Where dynamism, meaning embrace
Jennifer Fisher, LA Times

On a list of dance territories worth revisiting, the recent experiments of the Jazz Tap Ensemble's Lynn Dally and a handful of border-crossing virtuosos have to be included. Her genre-mixing "Solea," first seen at Highways a few years ago, was bracing again in "Dancing Blues," Dally's hourlong entry in the C.O.L.A. series (showcasing work supported by City of Los Angeles grants) Saturday night at the Los Angeles Theatre Center. It was "we are the world" ambitious, using lifetimes of study and individual dynamism to create meaningful and entertaining dance.

Young tap artists work magic on jazz standards
by DEBORAH JOWITT fo the Village

In an evening composed almost entirely of high points and no low ones, I'd like to mention Holmes's marvelous bout of "improvography" to Vernon Duke and E.Y. Harburg's "April in Paris" with McGarry and the other musicians. In a solo like this, he shows that listening to the music and letting it be heard is as important as dancing.
