Takings soar as town comes to the circus

In Melbourne yesterday, Mario D'Amico, Cirque du Soleil's vice-president of marketing, announced that the show, an amalgam of performance art, theatre and traditional circus skills, will return to Australia this year for a five-city tour.

The unimpeded focus in this tiny theatre is the human body. It is astonishing what four tough, acrobatic movers can do. And there are no tricks. Downstairs at Belvoir, the audience is so close we are practically out there with them: "Everyone in the front row, please keep your feet behind the white line," we are asked.

It took about 60 people to raise the giant tent on 4.8m steel poles at the ASB Showgrounds.

Four more smaller structures - including the backstage zone in which trapeze artists dress, jugglers warm up and contortionists prepare to go on stage - awaited the set-up crew ahead of next Friday's opening of Varekai.

It might be the biggest circus in the land with almost as many franchises as a fast food chain but Cirque du Soleil still feels like a circus.
