Riverdance takes the final step

by JUDY VICKERS
the Edinburgh Evening News

After ten years, the show is on its final UK tour. Ginnery will be dancing the female lead, Riverwoman, whose soft-shoe dance aims to evoke the flow of the river, when the show returns to the Playhouse for an 11-day run on Monday.

I wonder why Riverdance is calling: "last orders, please". At a Riverdance clone event in Bromley an enthusiastic audience, including me, had a fine time, so there is clearly still a strong market for Irish dance stage shows.

Riverdance
By Donald Hutera

“NO LIFE is forever” intones the disembodied narrator of Riverdance. He could be talking about the production itself, which has just embarked upon what is being touted as its final UK tour.

Created by the composer Bill Whelan, the producer Moya Doherty and the director John McColgan, Riverdance has a secure place in showbiz history. Since the Dublin premiere ten years ago this month, the Irish dance sensation has racked up more than 8,000 performances in more than 250 venues worldwide.

How Step Dancing Became the Lord of Irish Feet

by JOHN ROCKWELL
the New York Dance

For all the glitz, what they're doing looks and sounds rather like American square dance, which is appropriate, given the profound influence of Anglo-Irish-Scottish music on American folkways.

Riverdance 10th anniversary show enthralls

by the United Press International

As an entertainment phenomenon and one of the longest-running live shows in theater history, Riverdance is under pressure to be bigger and better with each passing year. The 10-performance Music Hall engagement does not disappoint in this regard and is a tribute to the talents of producer Moya Doherty.

Riverdance, Apollo Hammersmith, London
by ZOE ANDERSON for the Independent

In the emigration scene, a baritone turns up to praise the suffering masses. "Yes! They may be poor in birth," he declaims, "but yes! How great each one is worth!" I note that the Riverdance producers specify an "African-American baritone" for that scene. They want a showboat moment, an unstated link with the idea of slavery.

A short piece on the profits from Riverdance

Dance duo leap to profits of €13.7m
From The Times

FULL Schilling Investment Company (FSIC), which is owned by the Riverdance promoters John McColgan and Moya Doherty, posted pre-tax profits of €13.7m in 2002, writes Brian Carey.

McColgan and Doherty stripped out more than €9m in salaries and pensions from Abhann Productions, the holding company for Riverdance, in the year to June 2002, adding to earnings of more than €12m from 2001.

From Tenley Woodman in the Boston Herald:
Quote:
Riverdance’ falls short
Boston loves “Riverdance,” and there isn’t anything a reviewer can write to change that.
The touring Irish stepdance troupe celebrated its sixth run at the Wang Theater Friday night.
Despite enthusiastic applause from the near-capacity crowd following the performance, the theatrical production has slipped into mediocrity since its creation 10 years ago.
