In our increasingly sedentary, homogenous society, it's hard to be up to snuff on the dances of various cultures. One sure-fire way to remedy this deficiency would be to attend the auditions for the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival.
More than 100 Northern California dance companies will vie for one of 40 coveted slots in the 30th anniversary of the series, which will be in June at the same venue. The companies competing for a spot range from the expected Mexican folklorico and Irish step dancers to more exotic fare, like belly dance fusion and bomba/Afro-Puerto Rican. There'll even be some hip-hop.
