AN ancient dance preserved down the generations by a handful of gurus and choreographers is being given a new lease of life in a touring show.

Essence of Kathak is based around the 500-year old Kathak dance, a classical north Indian style influenced by Hindu mythology, Islam and the Mogul courts.

As artistic director Balbir Singh tells it, the dance was developed as a way for travellers to fund their way of life.

"Kathak came from the north and it began when the gypsies travelled to India and they took inspiration from the culture and similarities between the musical structures of their traditional music and the local Indian music," says Balbir...
