The program, titled “Face of America: Hawaii,” is a high-tech spectacle, but the dance and music go back at least eight generations in the Kanaka’ole family of Hilo, Hawaii. They have been handed down from woman to woman and taught in the family’s Halau O Kekuhi, a school for a particular traditional style of worship, in Hilo on the Big Island.
