Fuerzabruta

IT WAS originally a Victorian railway shed, then a gin warehouse; on Monday night, after a two-year closure and a £29.7 million restoration, the Roundhouse officially reopened as a handsomely equipped arts centre.

The occasion was marked in spectacular style by Fuerzabruta, created by the team behind the Argentine company De La Guarda, whose blend of jaw-dropping acrobatics and stunning imagery was a sellout hit during the venue’s more dilapidated days in 1999.

James has explained that the idea behind Fuerzabruta performances is “the sensation that you are never completely safe. You know you are in Europe, watching a show, but there is a feeling that you have to be on your guard”. He has also confessed himself a bit of an Anglophile, the English having the necessary Anglo-Saxon coarseness and lack of inhibition to fling themselves into a loud, damp, messy evening.
