A `Drowsy' Musical

The intermissionless musical, which opened Monday night at the Marquis Theatre, uses Martin's chair man as aguide to the musicals of the '20s, with special attention to the all-but-forgotten (and totally invented) "The Drowsy Chaperone." Initially slapped together to fete the real life upcoming wedding of Martin and comedian Janet Van De Graaff, the musical-within-a-monologue centers on the upcoming fictional marriage of Foster's character, a star who no longer wants to show off. The name of the top headliner of the Feldzieg Follies is none other than Janet Van De Graaff.

Martin says fringe `Drowsy Chaperone' worthy of Broadway

Bob Martin co-wrote "The Drowsy Chaperone," the Canadian fringe show that morphed into the sleeper hit of the Broadway season. And his unusual, quirky performance as the nebbish Man in Chair (whose dreams of 1920s musicals come alive in his crummy apartment) is among the favorites of the Broadway musical season. Even though he hardly sings a note.

Once the artistic director of Second City Toronto, Martin chatted by phone on his way to the Marriott Marquis Theatre.
