Performances were somewhat flat Sat afternoon of this current Broadway production, with even Huey Lewis seemingly losing his voice. Maybe it's the matinee cast but there wasn't a lot of sizzle in this performance, with Mama's role played by understudy Sharon Moore the most disappointing. But the show still has its sex factor and catchy numbers to keep audiences happy.

Audience is sure to be razzle dazzled
by THOM DIBDIN for the Edinburgh Evening News
published: October 11, 2006

Last night's triumphant return of Chicago to Edinburgh also saw the sizzling Jennifer Ellison as Roxie threaten to melt a hole in the stage.

A national dance champion in her youth, the former Brookside star's dazzling footwork was enough to put even her ex, Steven Gerrard, to shame.

Two reviews of a revival currently playing in Boston.

From Jenna Scherer in the Herald:

‘Chicago’ razzle-dazzles fans at the Colonial
....
Though it’s been running on Broadway for 12 years and counting and has spawned an excellent movie adaptation, Walter Bobbie’s production of “Chicago” continues to wow. ...
Like many touring productions, this “Chicago” comes with its requisite celebrity casting. This time it’s [Tom] Wopat, of “Dukes of Hazzard” fame. Fortunately, this B-lister has actual stage experience up his sleeve. While he lacks the polish Billy Flynn ought to have, he’s got the lawyerly sleaze down.

From Louise Kennedy in the Globe:
Quote:
In 'Chicago,' corruption with a kick
More than a decade after its triumphant revival, with umpteen national tours and international companies still going strong, "Chicago," that deliciously cynical musical, proves in its current stop at the Colonial Theatre that it's virtually incorruptible.

The musical Chicago is based on a play of the same name by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins, who had been assigned to cover the 1924 trials of murderesses Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner for the Chicago Tribune. The story is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice, and the concept of the "celebrity criminal". The musical is based on a 1926 play of the same name by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins about actual criminals and crimes she had reported on.
