Shall We Fado? On a Cloud of Fatalism, Shall We Fly?more...
by CLAUDIA LA ROCCO for the New York Times
Choreographed by the artistic director, Vasco Wellenkamp, "Amaramália" followed 10 songs recorded by the great Amália Rodrigues in an evening of short, nonnarrative dances. Wilson Galvão's simple set of movable wooden benches, juxtaposed against the exposed brick wall at the back of the stage, worked with Galina Lukianovich's smoky lighting design to create a bare, informal space; you could easily imagine the action unfolding in an abandoned church or the back room of a restaurant.
