Taylor continues to be a model of choreographer’s art
Fledgling choreographers would do well to study Paul Taylor’s work. If only their best dances could look as good as his worst ones.
Except that he doesn’t have any worst ones. In over two decades of watching his company closely, I can’t think of anything by Taylor that doesn’t delight and surprise me. That said, he has made some lesser works, and his recent “Klezmerbluegrass” falls in that category.

However, given its Boston premiere last night during the Paul Taylor Dance Company’s Celebrity Series engagement, “Klezmerbluegrass” seems conscientiously crafted to be a crowd pleaser -- sweet, cute, easy to look at, but disappointingly glib.

He is routinely dubbed the best choreographer alive. Nor is it much of an exaggeration to say he has seen it all: early struggles in the '50s, buoyed by such inimitable mentors as George Balanchine and Martha Graham; glory in the boom years of the '60s and '70s; survival in the era of cutbacks in the '80s and '90s. True to his nature, and, perhaps, his own seeming indomitability, Taylor remains an optimist.

Paul Taylor and Prometheus Dance

For his 50th-anniversary season, Paul Taylor revived two of his best, baddest dances. We got to see Big Bertha and Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rehearsal) together on May 21 at the Shubert Theatre. Company B replaced Big Bertha for the other two performances, the last of this season’s dance offerings on the Bank of America Celebrity Series. Taylor’s new Klezmerbluegrass ran all three nights.
