[Excerpted from a Le Groupe Newsletter, 06 Dec 2000]

Le Groupe Dance Lab is a creative hothouse that nurtures artists and audiences simultaneously while providing a safe haven where choreographers can make challenging choices and follow new roads in their working methods. For any art form to flourish the artist must be able to take risks and the primary objective of Le Groupe Dance Lab is to offer a facility that makes this possible. Le Groupe maintains the highest integrity and standards, allowing new dance to thrive and choreographers to be pioneers once again.
Image
Julia Sasso Launches a New Chapter in Her Career
Taking chances and embracing new beginnings are key aspects of the creative impetus that has propelled Julia Sasso in her growth as an artist. Having recently left Toronto s Dancemakers after 16 years as a dancer, principal teacher, and Assistant Artistic Director, she now relishes the challenge of a new series of projects, including the creation of her own company. Julia touches down in Ottawa for a three-week residency at Le Groupe Dance Lab to research the language of movement and music she will use to compose the next chapter of her choreographic career.
Julia s choreography has been described as surreal, sensuous, and intriguing. I like a strong physicality, I like to see dancers dance , she explains. Julia chose Ottawa choreographer, performer and teacher Tedd Robinson to be her monitor for this process. Julia greatly admires Tedd s diversity as a creator, and the careful balance he achieves between technical dancing and theatricality. Tedd makes movement that speaks, I want to learn how he does it. In the last week of her residency, Julia will be joined by composers/musicians Geoff Bennett and Jeff Wilson who will develop and perform an original score for the work. For more information on Julia read the article Julia Sasso: Passionate, creative and breathtaking in motion in the December 6 Ottawa Citizen:

quote:
"Julia Sasso earned less than $25,000 last year as the assistant artistic director of Dancemakers, but the good times are over for now. The 44-year-old dancer-choreographer will earn a lot less this year than she did in 1999-2000, her 16th and final season with the Toronto-based contemporary dance troupe.
Now an independent dancer- choreographer based in Toronto, Sasso is working in Ottawa this month with the talented dancers from Le Groupe's Dance Lab"

[This message has been edited by Marie (edited December 06, 2000).]
