Dominic Walsh knew a long time ago that he'd have to work harder than other ballet dancers to become a star because of his modest physique.

Now the 32-year-old Houston Ballet principal is working overtime for other reasons.

His new company, the Dominic Walsh Dance Theater, debuts Friday and Saturday at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts with the program Moving Bodies, Moving Minds. Houston Ballet's Ben Stevenson is the evening's host.

Walsh's 'Flames of Eros' both thrilling and promising

MOLLY GLENTZER, Houston Chronicle

It's difficult to think of a more heavenly Valentine's Day ballet than Dominic Walsh's Flames of Eros. And it shot straight to the heart Friday at the Hobby Center world premiere of the Houston Ballet principal's new company, Dominic Walsh Dance Theater. more

This time out, Walsh is telling his own tale

Even as a kid, Dominic Walsh had stories in his head. That temperament has long served his dancing with Houston Ballet, where he excels in dramatic roles such as Romeo and Peer Gynt. But those are other people's tales. Now -- as a choreographer -- he's creating his own.

Walsh's first narrative ballet, The Miller's Daughter, premieres tonight at the Wortham Theater Center. His company, Dominic Walsh Dance Theater, also will perform Aymon Aaron Harper's Bed Fears, Dream Piles.

'Miller's Daughter' is poetry in motion
By MOLLY GLENTZER

Romantic music, poetry and magical realism are a potent mix in Dominic Walsh's first contemporary story ballet, The Miller's Daughter. The compelling 40-minute work premiered Nov. 6 at the Wortham Theater Center, along with Aymon Aaron Harper's intriguing Bed Fears, Dream Piles.

Dominic Walsh Dance Theater is not officially Houston Ballet's experimental satellite company, but it could be. Eleven of the 14 performers, including Walsh, are with the troupe; another is a former soloist. On this occasion, they did the mother company proud.

The Miller's Daughter was exceptionally well-conceived and executed, danced with passion and utter commitment. The music, performed onstage by pianist Katherine Burkwall-Ciscon, cellist Barrett Sills and tenor Stephen Young, helped create an ethereal atmosphere. It was almost too quiet -- probably because the musicians were so far upstage. And I was distracted by constant camera shutter-clicks somewhere in the theater.

Dominic Walsh is taking a sabbatical for 2014-15 and the future of the company seems doubtful. Joel Luks reports in CultureMap Houston.
